Number Eight: Simulation Theory
Does the WORST Muse album really exist? I don't think so. Each one is enjoyable and appealing in its own right. But that being said, I'm not wild about the group's latest effort. Everything on this album is just very mediocre and average, or pretty bad. Even the high points and best tracks from Simulation Theory don't come anywhere close to the middle-class tracks from, say, Black Holes and Revelations. Really the only song from this record that I listen to on a semi-regular basis is the second track, The Dark Side, I think that's definitely Simulation Theory's best. Algorithm is good too, and I guess Pressure and Blockades have some merit to them. But pretty much everything else from this album just blends together; almost nothing is memorable, and some of it is downright unenjoyable. Thought Contagion, Get Up And Fight, and Dig Down are all songs that I do not care for at all, and I often forget that Something Human and The Void even exist. As for the two tracks I haven't mentioned, Propaganda and Break It To Me, I could honestly take 'em or leave 'em. Simulation Theory is not necessarily a bad album, but if you were going to listen to a Muse record, why would you pick this one?
Number Seven: The Resistance
Origin Of Symmetry, Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations. I can't think of a lot of bands that have ever released such a strong trio of albums consecutively. Unfortunately, they followed up BHaR with The Resistance, which is a real mess. One of my major issues with this album is that it seems to just drag on for so damn long, way overstaying its welcome. And I know that its about the same length as some of the other, better albums, like Origin, but The Resistance is not nearly as engaging. I know it makes me sound basic as hell, but Uprising is by far this album's best track in my opinion. I can enjoy MK Ultra and the title track from time to time, and, while it seems to be one of the least popular Muse tracks, I kind of like Guiding Light. Exogenesis Symphony has its moments, but it really drags on too long. Almost every song from this album is mediocre, forgettable, and overall, not really worth any repeated listens. The name of the game for The Resistance is unengaging, which wouldn't be as huge of a problem if every track weren't so damn long. It's just a bit too symphonic and over the top.
Number Six: Showbiz
Now we're at the records that I don't have as many negative things to say about. Showbiz, while on the lower end of my ranking, is a great debut and entry point in the band's discography. I think this record has aged somewhat uniquely and sounds very.... muted, if that makes sense. For me, this album is about half and half; there are like six or seven tracks that I really like, but everything else is a tad unmemorable to me. I have to start off by mentioning Muscle Museum; that track is still one of the best Muse songs to date, and one of lmy personal top five. I also really love track five Cave, a deeply underrated cut. Sunburn is a fantastic opener, Uno is the incredible mess of noise it is, and the title track has an excellent buildup throughout its five minute run time. Unfortunately, Showbiz just doesn't leave as much of an impression on me as most of the other Muse records, and that keeps it from climbing any higher on this ranking. I think it just gets a tad dull at times, and, like I mentioned before, only about half of the tracks are memorable to me. Nonetheless, a strong debut and still a pretty good album.
Number Five: Drones
Yes, Drones does suffer a few flaws. The interludes are cringey and unnecessary, the lead single is cheesy and poorly written, and the title track is almost unlistenable nonsense. But the majority of the tracks from the band's seventh album are absolutely awesome. Muse returned to more of a hard rock sound for Drones, and it turned out to be the most cohesive of their recent output. Dead Inside is a great opening track and does a wonderful job setting the tone for the record, and The Handler and Defector have some simply incredible instrumental work. Reapers, while not quite reaching the heights of some of Muse's older long tracks such as Citizen Erased or Knights of Cydonia, is an epic, badass battle cry with an amazing guitar solo. And yes, I know The Globalist is much longer, but I don't care for that one as much. I especially want to single out Mercy, which has both fantastic lyricism and an excellent vocal performance. I also really love Revolt, a track that seems to get a lot of hate, which shocks me. Drones might not be Muse's best work, but it's definitely a strong addition to their discography with more than just a few tracks worth repeated listens.
Number Four: The 2nd Law
I recognize that putting The 2nd Law as high as No. 4 is probably a tad controversial, but I truly believe that this album is worthy of being ranked in the top half of the discography. This is a highly experimental record, exploring lots of different sounds and styles, but I don't just see it as an incoherent mess, I see it as an amazing variety. The second single Madness is a bit off-putting at first, but with repeated listens, it grew on me a lot, and it's a genuine favorite of mine now. Supremacy is a good opening track with cool riffs and fantastic vocals, and Explorers is a very touching, beautiful track, a personal favorite. Track three Panic Station is one of my favorite Muse songs of all time, I just love the awesome funk rock vibe and Bellamy's falsettos are excellent. I also want to mention the Wolstenholme tracks Save Me and Liquid State, the former of which has very touching lyrics, and the ladder with absolutely phenomenal instrumentation. The band's sixth effort is perhaps their least cohesive, but it still makes for an incredible listen.
Number Three: Origin Of Symmetry
I know, I know. To most of you, number three probably seems a tad low for Muse's most beloved record. And of course I still absolutely love Origin Of Symmetry. But there's actually a very simple reason as to why I rank it at the bottom of the holy trinity.... second half syndrome. I might be a bit of a minority on this opinion, but I think there are a few moments on the back end of this record that are just a tad.... dull. Not bad, just less exciting and memorable. I mean, does anybody ACTUALLY get down with Screenager? But I still think Origin is a god tier album. I know I've mentioned opening tracks for pretty much every item so far (damn, Muse is really good at picking first tracks), but New Born is the absolute best opener they've ever had. And it's then followed by more and more amazing tracks. Bliss, Space Dementia, and Hyper Music are all incredible classics. This record also boasts the legendary masterpieces Citizen Erased and Plug In Baby, both of which have absolutely amazing instrumentation. On Origin Of Symmetry, Muse expanded on their hard rock and space rock sound from Showbiz, and created more memorable, accessible tracks. Excellent sophomore outing.
Number Two: Black Holes And Revelations
Black Holes And Revelations is the perfect balance of classic Muse and their newer sound, incorporating elements of alternative, spack rock, and pop rock into a flawless blend. I can honestly say that almost every track from this album is phenomenal. Singles Supermassive Black Hole and Starlight prove that Muse knows how to do pop music right, and the gargantuan legend that is Knights Of Cydonia is extreme experimentation in the best possible way. Map Of The Problematique is among my all-time favorites from the band, showing fantastic lyricism and incredible vocals. Invincible, Assassin, Exo-Politics, Hoodoo, this album simply does not stop. Black Holes And Revelations is where the albums honestly fall into the territory of perfection for me, although I don't love it quite as much as my number one choice.
Number One: Absolution
Brilliant. That is the word that best describes Absolution in my eyes. This album is absolutely brilliant. The instrumentation, the lyricism, the coherency, everything about this record is phenomenal. Absolution is a flawless concept record about the idea of the end of the world, musing on thoughts of religion, fear, and the afterlife. But conceptualization and cohesiveness aside, every track on this record is damn fantastic. Singles Stockholm Syndrome and Time Is Running Out are nice parallels, the former being one of the band's heaviest tracks to date and the latter focusing a bit more on the pop side of things. Both are equally incredible. Butterflies And Hurricanes is what I believe to be Muse's most mature and masterful piece to date, and Hysteria easily earns the mark of my favorite song from the group. Blackout, Sing For Absolution, Fury, Endlessly, The Small Print, Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist, you will not find one track from this record that is not fucking fire. Absolution is among my favorite albums of all time, and I definitely think of it as Muse's best.

Muse’s fusion of progressive rock, electronica, and Radiohead-influenced experimentation have helped them sell millions of records and top charts worldwide. It’s all crafted by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard, a trio of friends who began playing music together in their hometown of Teignmouth, Devon; they started the first incarnation of the band at the age of 13, changing the name of the group from Gothic Plague to Fixed Penalty to Rocket Baby Dolls as time passed. By 1997, the bandmates settled on the name Muse and released their self-titled debut EP on Dangerous Records, followed by the Muscle Museum EP in 1998. The group’s emotive, passionate sound and live presence drew critical acclaim and industry buzz, and Muse signed a deal with Maverick Records after a trip to New York’s CMJ festival. The singles “Cave” and “Uno” preceded their debut full-length album, Showbiz, which was released toward the end of 1999. Two years later, Muse issued Origin of Symmetry and had a major hit with “Hyper Music,” which helped propel the album to platinum status in the U.K. ― Allmusic
